Refugee camp improvement project in Palestine

Paticipatory and inclusive camp improvement in West bank

I designed booklets summarising the refugee camp improvement project in West Bank, Palestine, supported by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The project aims to include diverse voices in the camp, and take a participatory approach.

The booklet has three language editions – in Japanese, Arabic and English. Primarily, the booklet is used by local people from DoRA, a local organisation working in West Bank, with the aim of soliciting further support internationally in the future. In order for the booklet design to work in Arabic and English, I used typefaces Kanun and Roshan designed by TPTQ. I was in charge of the design of the English and Japanese editions until the end, while I asked a local Palestinian designer to finalise the Arabic edition since I am not familiar with Arabic.

Through this booklet design, I had an opportunity to talk with staff from DoRA, learnt about the refugee camps in the West Bank and the people who are working hard to improve the environment for people especially women and children.

I hope that a project like this will continue to get some funding and make a real support for people in Palestine.

日本の国際協力機構（JICA）がサポートしてきた、パレスチナ・ヨルダン川西岸の難民キャンプを住民の人たちのボトムアップで改善するプロジェクト（PALCIP）の成果をまとめる冊子をデザインしました。

JICAが協力パートナーで、パレスチナ・ヨルダン川西岸で活動する現地の団体DoRAの人たちが使用し、今後のサポートを世界からさらに募るという目的を持つ冊子のため、日本語、アラビア語、英語の３言語で作成しています。アラビア語と英語の見え方を優先し、TPTQが発行している欧文とアラビア語の両方が用意されている書体を使用しました。英語と日本語は最後までデザインを担当し、話者でないアラビア語版は現地のデザイナーさんに本文の調整をお願いしました。

この冊子のデザインを通し、ヨルダン川西岸の難民キャンプで働くDoRAのスタッフの方と話す機会を得て、キャンプや人々の生活の様子、少しでも女性や子どもたちのために住環境を良くしようと活動する人たちの存在を知りました。

このような改善プロジェクトのサポートが今後も続くことを強く願っています。
