Decorative English

The role of decorative English in Japanese graphic design

In one of my MA studies, I researched the role of decorative English in the Japanese graphic design industry. The short thesis about the topic that I wrote is downloadable here.

This book was an attempt to highlight the unique usage of decorative English in Japanese graphic design by eliminating all the elements apart from English and turning them into a monotone image. I bound them with a traditional Japanese binding.

The reason why I chose this topic was that I had a question about why Japanese graphic designers use so much English even though their audience doesn’t speak English. Along with relearning our history again, I observed the way English is used in Japanese graphic design. It was a great opportunity to investigate the border between language and ornament (shape), and how Japanese people perceive information through different visual languages.
