Apus apus Calendar 2023
Paper craft bird calendar
This is a 2023 edition of Apus apus calendar which I made last year.
It features the significance of the migratory bird, Common Swift (Latin name: Apus apus). One of the incredible things about this bird is that it can fly for 10 months without landing – they eat, sleep and mate in the air. Luckily, in Denmark and many parts of Northern Europe, we can still see them when they come back to breed in the summertime. However, their population is in decline and they are red-listed in the UK recently.
I wanted to create a data visualisation about the bird that speaks to human emotions – in the end, I thought the calendar is a perfect medium since their migration journey is seasonal and you will keep the calendar in your home which is quite intimate. I drew these swifts with some help of amazing photos by @sereth.photography

昨年大学院の課題で制作したアマツバメカレンダーの2023年版をつくりました。
Common Swift（ラテン名：Apus apus）というアマツバメの一種である渡鳥をテーマにしています。この鳥は北ヨーロッパで夏に巣作り、子育てをし、冬の間はアフリカ大陸の南部で過ごします。食事も睡眠も交尾も空中で行うことで知られており、あるリサーチでは、１つの個体が10ヶ月間まったく地面に降りずに飛び続けていたということもわかりました。デンマークに来て、夏にこの鳥が空を飛んでいるのを見てから、Common Swift （ラテン名 Apus apus）にすっかり魅了されているのですが、近年個体数が一気に減少し、イギリスではレッドリスト（絶滅危惧種）になってしまったと知りました。
元々、この鳥をテーマに人々の感情に響くようなデータビジュアライゼーションをしようと試みでした。悩んだ挙句、最終的に渡りが季節に沿ったものであることと家の中で使ってもらえることなどから、カレンダーが一番よい媒体だと考えました。イラストはデンマーク在住の写真家 Jan Sereth Larsen さんによる写真を見ながらインクで描いています。
