Korean shortstories book design

I designed a book for the Japanese translation edition of "산 자들" by South Korean author Chang Kang-myoung.

The author, Jang, is a writer who worked in journalism before becoming a writer and is known for a wide range of works, from social criticism to science fiction. The book focuses on ‘labour’ – and he describes people trapped in various workplaces delicately and yet comically. The stories had a lot of similarities with what is happening in Japanese society and I could easily relate to them.

Although many of the stories carry the toughness of the society, there are also some funny and refreshing scenes. So I aimed to make the book to have a relatively light feeling. The illustration is by Sayuri Fujimaki. I chose a red colour for the endpapers to represent the burning pain of the battles.

韓国の作家、チャン・ガンミョンさんの作品『산 자들』の日本語訳書籍『鳥は飛ぶのが楽しいか』の装丁をしました。

著者のチャンさんはジャーナリズムを経て、文筆家になった方で、社会批評からSFまで幅広い作品で知られています。この本では「労働」にフォーカスしながら、さまざまな職場、環境で追い詰められる人々の様子を丁寧に、かつコミカルに書かれています。日本社会の中で起きていることとの類似性が高く、共感できる話ばかりでした。

多くのストーリーが社会の中の苦しさを描写していますが、笑いもあり、爽快なシーンもあり、本の佇まいとしては軽やかさを重視しました。イラストは藤巻佐有梨さんです。戦いのヒリヒリとした部分を表現するために、見返しには赤を選んでいます。
